2 Generator technology overview

2.1 Introduction :

Generators are equipments used to convert other forms of energy into electrical energy. This
driver can be a hydraulic turbine, stream turbine, diesel engine, or other power equipment
which converts otherforms of energy to mechanical and then transfers it to the generator to
convert it into electricity. The typical bases of classification of generators are :

- On the basis of output current -   Alternating Current (AC) generators and Direct Current (DC)
generators.
- On the basis of fuel/technology used - diesel generators, gas generators, petrol generators,
wind generators, hydraulic generators, and solar generators.

The basic construction of a generator includes an engine, an alternator, fuel system, voltage
regulator, cooling and exhaust systems, lubrication system, battery charger, control panel and
a main assembly. The engines of a generator may vary with the type of fuel they use. While the
smaller generators operate on gasoline, the larger generators work on diesel, liquid propane,
propane gas or natural gas.

Alternator is the primary component of a generator also known as its head.

The alternator consists of the following :
- A Rotor - This is a component which   moves in a rotating magnetic field to produce electricity.
This might work on   induction (called as brushless alternator), by permanent magnets or by
using an exciter which would supply DC power to the alternator to energize   the rotor.
- A Stator - This is a stationary   component of a generator which   contains electrical conductors
wound over a coil.

Power Unit - 58 HP @ 2,300 RPM diesel engine with 12-volt electric start engine.
Feed Mechanism - The main feed consists of double acting chain drive mechanism
connected to a hydraulic cylinder with 48” stroke and capable of 11,000 lbs. upward
thrust and 11,000 lbs. pull down. Feed speeds are 0-72 RPM up and down.

Drill Drive - Taken from prime mover through a variable volume over center piston
pump and tandem fi xed volume pump.
Drill Head - 4-Speed. 3-5/8” open spindle.
1st gear (0-120 RPM @ 3,028 ft./lbs. torque)
2nd gear (0-252 RPM @ 1,452 ft./lbs. torque)
3rd gear (0-456 RPM @ 788 ft./lbs. torque)
4th gear (0-750 RPM @ 458 ft./lbs. torque)
Mast - Welded rectangular structural steel tube construction that supports
and guides the rotation of feed components.
Positioned with one (1) hydraulic cylinder and rigidly held in the vertical position for
drilling and is lowered to the travel position for moving from hole to hole.

Mast mounting allows for angle as well as 90 degree vertical drilling. Also includes
mast dump up to 36”. Includes crown block with sheaves.

Track Mounting - The entire drill is mounted on a structural steel frame and is
self-propelled by 9” rubber crawler tracks with independent reversible hydraulic
motor drive as well as full function remote radio control. Ground bearing
pressure 5.2 P.S.I. without options or tooling.

Low Clearance Sheave Block Assembly - For use with cathead operation in low ceiling situations.
