Fuel cells – Higher efficiency and almost zero emissions

A fuel cell is a zero-emission source of power, and the only byproduct of a fuel cell is water.
Some fuel cells use natural gas or hydrocarbons as fuel, but even those produce far less
emissions than conventional sources. Therefore, they eliminate or at least vastly reduce the
pollution and greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, and since they are
also quiet in operation, they also reduce noise pollution.
Fuel cells are more efficient than
combustion engines as they generate electricity electrochemically and not by burning fossil
fuels. Since they can produce electricity onsite, the waste heat produced can also be used for
heating purposes. Most of the fuel cells today operate at XX% fuel-to-electricity efficiency.
Additionally, when used in combination with turbine fuel cells they can operate at more than
XX% fuel efficiency. For cogeneration purposes the efficiency of fuel cells can exceed XX%.

Transportation sector is the most sought after application segment for fuel cells

Fuel cells are the most promising clean technology that can be used to power transportation
vehicles. Apart from meeting emissions legislation fuel cells are also required to reach
operating temperature quickly. PEM fuel cells are best suited for this purpose because of
their ability to operate at low temperatures and adjust quickly to changing load requirements.
Fuel cells are used to power cars, buses, scooters, forklifts, auxiliary power units, trains,
planes, and boats.

High costs hindering the growth of this industry

Fuel cells are a new technology, which is competing with conventional and other cheaper
technologies. The technology is still evolving so economies of scale are not yet present. As
well as this, most of the fuel cell technologies use precious metals such as platinum as their
catalysts; this increases the cost of the design. In order to be competitive, fuel cell technology
developers need to search for an effective, but less expensive option. Long-term demand for
metals is expected to continue rising, mainly due to the increase in demand from countries
like India and China. This high demand for metals is likely to cause metal prices to rise in the
long term, which, in turn, will increase the prices of the fuel cell. The usage of expensive metals
and the lack of economies of scale make the initial cost of fuel systems very high, causing
potential customers to opt for other options.

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells are the most sought-after fuel cells as they have
many applications in the transportation sector. A large number of fuel cell companies and
automobile companies across the world are involved in research to roll out a commercial fuel
cell vehicle. Their operating temperatures are also favorable for application in this segment.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are applied in stationary applications and auxiliary power units.

2 Global fuel cells market, technology analysis

2.1 Introduction

An electrochemical cell that converts fuel source into electric current is known as a fuel cell.
In  a fuel cell, the reaction between a fuel and an oxidant in the presence of an electrolyte
produces electricity. There are a variety of fuels and oxidant combinations that can be used
in this process. The fuels include hydrogen, hydrocarbons and alcohols, and the oxidants
include chlorine and chlorine dioxides.

Fuel cells are made up of three segments, an anode, cathode and an electrolyte. The
catalyst in the cell accelerates the reaction, separates the electrons and protons of the fuel
and forces the electrons to pass through an electrical circuit to generate electricity. The
catalyst also combines the electrons back with the protons to form water and carbon dioxide.

A single fuel cell produces very less amount of direct current. In practice, many fuel cells are
assembled in to a stack in either series or parallel connections to suit the needs. Fuel cells
in series generate a higher voltage while fuel cells in parallel produce higher current.

Fuel cells – Higher efficiency and almost zero emissions

A fuel cell is a zero-emission source of power, and the only byproduct of a fuel cell is water.
Some fuel cells use natural gas or hydrocarbons as fuel, but even those produce far less
emissions than conventional sources. Therefore, they eliminate or at least vastly reduce the
pollution and greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, and since they are
also quiet in operation, they also reduce noise pollution.
Fuel cells are more efficient than
combustion engines as they generate electricity electrochemically and not by burning fossil
fuels. Since they can produce electricity onsite, the waste heat produced can also be used for
heating purposes. Most of the fuel cells today operate at XX% fuel-to-electricity efficiency.
Additionally, when used in combination with turbine fuel cells they can operate at more than

well as this, most of the fuel cell technologies use precious metals such as platinum as their
catalysts; this increases the cost of the design. In order to be competitive, fuel cell technology

2 Global fuel cells market, technology analysis

2.1 Introduction

An electrochemical cell that converts fuel source into electric current is known as a fuel cell.
In  a fuel cell, the reaction between a fuel and an oxidant in the presence of an electrolyte
produces electricity. There are a variety of fuels and oxidant combinations that can be used
in this process. The fuels include hydrogen, hydrocarbons and alcohols, and the oxidants
include chlorine and chlorine dioxides.

Fuel cells are made up of three segments, an anode, cathode and an electrolyte. The
catalyst in the cell accelerates the reaction, separates the electrons and protons of the fuel
and forces the electrons to pass through an electrical circuit to generate electricity. The

Fuel cells – Higher efficiency and almost zero emissions

A fuel cell is a zero-emission source of power, and the only byproduct of a fuel cell is water.
Some fuel cells use natural gas or hydrocarbons as fuel, but even those produce far less

fuels. Since they can produce electricity onsite, the waste heat produced can also be used for

High costs hindering the growth of this industry

Fuel cells are a new technology, which is competing with conventional and other cheaper

well as this, most of the fuel cell technologies use precious metals such as platinum as their

2 Global fuel cells market, technology analysis

2.1 Introduction

An electrochemical cell that converts fuel source into electric current is known as a fuel cell.
In  a fuel cell, the reaction between a fuel and an oxidant in the presence of an electrolyte
produces electricity. There are a variety of fuels and oxidant combinations that can be used
in this process. The fuels include hydrogen, hydrocarbons and alcohols, and the oxidants
include chlorine and chlorine dioxides.

Fuel cells are made up of three segments, an anode, cathode and an electrolyte. The
catalyst in the cell accelerates the reaction, separates the electrons and protons of the fuel
and forces the electrons to pass through an electrical circuit to generate electricity. The
catalyst also combines the electrons back with the protons to form water and carbon dioxide.

A single fuel cell produces very less amount of direct current. In practice, many fuel cells are
assembled in to a stack in either series or parallel connections to suit the needs. Fuel cells
in series generate a higher voltage while fuel cells in parallel produce higher current.
